Consciousness-raising (CR) groups which have deep empowerment and political organising roots are at the backbone of the Women's Liberation Movement.

Through consciousness-raising activity we begin to understand ourselves and other women by looking at situations that affect us in our own lives and over which we share common ground, where the personal is often political. Understanding the things, we have in common is the first step towards dealing with them collectively.

CR is something we do through unstated, mutual agreement –the form of speaking, the turn taking, the listening, the catharsis, the feelings (laughter, tears) the storytelling, the affirmation and recognition, the goal setting, the action CR is about women meeting in small groups to share and analyse their lived experience and apply their insights to activism for social justice.

Four key questions can be used to reveal how consciousness-raising proceeds from sharing to analysis to action.

1. WHAT IS?

2. WHY IS?

3. WHAT SHOULD?

4. HOW SHOULD?

These questions can become “automatic,” informing our ways of seeing, hearing, learning, being.
